Abstract: The method of separation of variables has long served as a fundamental technique for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), particularly in simple geometric domains. However, a natural question arises: can this method be extended to more complex or non-simple domains? Theoretically, it is well understood that separation of variables is not applicable in such cases. To overcome this limitation, we have developed a novel approach referred to as the Axial Green Function Method (AGM). Initially, AGM was formulated for general elliptic PDEs and later extended to address Stokes flows and convection-dominated convection-diffusion equations. More recently, the method has been adapted to handle unbounded domain problems in Stokes flows. The most significant advancement to date is the application of AGM to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which are inherently nonlinear and unsteady.

Bio: Prof. Do Wan Kim received PhD degree in mathematics from Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1995. Before joining Inha University in 2010, he had been worked in Sunmoon University and Hanyang University. He had visited Northwestern University for one year, collaborating with Professor Ted Belytschko and Professor Wing Kam Liu. His main research interests include Axial Green’s function Methods (AGM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), Meshfree Methods, as well as conventional methods: FEM, BEM, FDM. He also contributes to applications like photovoltaic and photobioreactor.
